Resumes are actually a good tool to find who you are looking for. Sure there are programs on the Internet that can help someone jazz up a resume, sure people exaggerate their experiences, and sure people give salary histories that are more what they thought they were worth than what they actually received. But a lot can be learned about a person on paper. Depending on what type of person you are looking for, their experiences can enhance your company in ways you couldn't imagine. Really spend some time reading each and every resume no matter how time consuming it may be. You can easily weed through the resumes that are obviously not a match but spending some time to find the right person can be like finding a diamond in the rough. This can be a very rewarding experience for employers to find the perfect employee.
Since the unemployment rate in the U.S. is near 8%, people will say and do whatever they can to get a job these days. This can be a huge benefit to business owners since you are in the driver's seat. More than likely you can get an employee for less than the national average since jobs are scarce and people need to eat. However, the worst thing an employer can do is try and take advantage of this situation and low ball the prospect.
The interview...This part of finding the perfect employee can be the most nerve wracking experience for the potential prospect. Make sure you understand this and know that they are trying to impress and are nervous at best. This person wants the job. Make sure you keep your interviews exciting and for the love of God, who cares what their 3 strengths and 3 weaknesses are??? What are they going to say..."Um, I guess my strengths are I put in a lot of hours even when you don't expect it, I treat your company as if I had ownership, and I'm one heck of a guy! I would have to say my 3 weaknesses are...I have a hard time getting up in the morning, I'm pretty good at embezzlement, and I spend a lot of time at work searching porn." Come on, are you really going to get anything valuable from those horrific questions? Treat the interview as if you really, really wanted to get to know this person. See if you click together, see if they would click with co-workers, figure out if they would excel at the job! Perhaps take the prospect around the office and introduce him or her to everyone else. Let the co-workers have some say in who gets hired. It is a team effort at any business and the team is what grows the company.
Finding the perfect employee is a task that can take some time. Your time is valuable but absolutely do not rush into hiring someone just for the sake of filling a position. If you just need a warm body, bring your dog to work. Take your time, do your research, and learn as much as you can about this person. Finding the perfect employee can make or break your business and your team can help you reach and exceed your goals more rapidly.
